Short Courses in Governance in the Voluntary Sector
NOCN Accredited Short Courses in ‘Governance in the Voluntary Sector’
National Open College Network (NOCN) has launched two new short qualifications of interest to voluntary and community groups. The Level 2 and Level 3 Awards (6 credits) in ‘Governance in the Voluntary and Community Sector’ are intended to help people develop the skills and understanding they need to be effective trustees or management committee members of new and existing voluntary and community organisations.
The qualifications are mapped closely to the Trustee and Management Committee National Occupational Standards (2006) and link to the Code of Good Governance (2010), supported by the Charity Commission, NCVO and others.
They were supported by Skills Third Sector and can be used by anyone over 16 who are interested in taking on a role on a governing body (e.g. Management Committee, Board of Trustees) or already active as members of a governing body.
The units in the qualification enable learners to:
- To investigate a governing body’s leadership role and its members’ responsibilities
- To recognise the importance of self development and accountability
- Develop an understanding of the regulatory and policy context for an organisation
- Develop some knowledge of common organisational structures in the sector
- Develop relevant skills and ways of working collectively
- To recognise their role in the strategic planning process
