Resources for trustees
National Occupational Standards don’t describe ‘how’ you should govern an organisation. Instead they set out ‘what’ you need to do and the things you need to know and understand. Other voluntary sector organisations provide information and guidance on how you can govern an organisation effectively.

ACEVO has publications, resources and training for trustees covering aspects of good governance from support to CEOs to finding trustees. ACEVO also offers governance reviews to voluntary sector organisations to help them assess the effectiveness of their boards, CEOs and trustees.
Charity Commission is the charity regulator for England and Wales and provides advice and guidance on setting up and managing a charity. Publishes a number of guides on charity governance including The Essential Trustee: What you need to know.
Directory of Social Change has a number of publications that provide advice and guidance on leadership, governance and organisational development topics.
ICSA (The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators) provides resources, training and consultancy to support professionals responsible for governance and compliance in organisations and businesses.
Runs events and provides consultancy and training on governance and leadership topics to voluntary sector organisations.
NCVO has developed the Good Governance Code which can be used in conjunction with the National Occupational Standards for Trustees.
The NCVO Governance and Leadership team has a large range of resources for governance and leadership including publications, events, training and forums. The team has produced a National Occupational Standards Toolkit for Trustees and a Guide for smaller organisations on how they can use the National Occupational Standards in practice.It also runs TrusteeBank which carries details of trustee vacancies and provides opportunities and advice to organisations wanting to recruit volunteers.
